KITTEN POLICY

Kittenbeleid

What can you expect from me?

It is always a privilege to see kittens grow up healthy and well, from the moment they are born to the moment they leave for their new homes. As a breeder you remember all these milestones like assisting with birth, witnessing their eyes open for the first time, their wobbly baby steps, tasting wet food for the first time, litter box training, their aventures, mischievous antics and of course, the countless cuddles.

At cattery Felis Limousi, kittens grow up in a loving environment and receive the best possible care. This gives them the ideal start to thrive as beloved family members in their future homes!

The kittens:

  • Are optimally socialized.

  • Receive two vaccinations against feline parvo and cat flu around 9-10 weeks and 12-13 weeks of age.*

  • Receive an additional rabies vaccination if they are moving abroad.

  • Are dewormed multiple times at 5, 7, 9, 12, and 16 weeks of age.

  • Are microchipped and registered under the new owner's name in the Cat ID database.

  • Are neutered around 14-15 weeks of age.**

  • Receive 2-3  health check-ups.

  • Have their parentage verified through DNA profiling.

  • Have a European passport, documenting vaccinations, deworming, and health checks.

  • Come with a certified pedigree from BCF, which includes lineage information and health tests of the parents.

  • Are sold with a purchase agreement and a health guarantee certificate.

  • Can move to their new homes around 16 weeks of age. Whenever possible, I bring the kittens to their new owners myself to support them during this exciting transition.

  • Receive a fun kitten package when they move to their new home.

*Vaccination against FeLV is not given by default, as all breeding cats (and thus all kittens) are free of this disease. However, it can be added to the vaccination schedule upon request. This may be important if the kitten will stay at a cat hotel during vacations or if it will live together with an outdoor cat in its future home.

**The only exception to this legal requirement is when a kitten is moving to a registered cattery.

What do I expect from future owners?

In my opinion, having a cat as a pet is a wonderful enrichment! However, owning a pet also comes with responsibilities. Therefore, take your time to carefully consider whether getting a kitten is the right choice for you. Below are some questions that may help you determine whether a cat, and specifically a British Shorthair, fits into your life:

  • Are you prepared for a long-term commitment, knowing that British Shorthairs have an average life span of 12 to 14 years?

  • Does the personality of a British Shorthair suit you?

  • Are you certain that no one in your household is allergic to cats?

  • Do you have enough time for a cat?

  • Who will take care of the cat when you go on vacation?

  • Are you willing to make your home cat-friendly and adjust to your cat’s needs?

  • Can you financially support your cat’s needs?

    • The initial cost of purchasing the cat, as well as essentials such as litter boxes, food and water bowls, a water fountain, a scratching post, a travel carrier, toys, beds, and grooming tools.

    • Recurring costs for preventive healthcare (vaccinations, parasite treatments), high-quality food, and cat litter. The annual cost of keeping a cat is estimated at €500-600 per year.

    • Unexpected medical expenses can be high (e.g., surgery for a broken leg: €1,200-1,500). Consider taking out pet insurance.

    • Potential costs for visits to a professional groomer or stays at a cat hotel.

  • Do you mind cat hair on your clothes or furniture? Or the fact that your cat might jump on the counter or table? Or that they may occasionally scratch things or get into mischief? Because these are all part of cat ownership!

Did you answer positively to all the questions and are you convinced that you can offer one of our kittens a loving forever home? Then feel free to contact us!

You can find more information on how to apply under the section ‘Waiting list’

IMPORTANT!

Our kittens are not allowed to roam freely outside due to the increased risk of infection with diseases such as FIV/FeLV, traffic accidents, theft, etc. If they can go outside with a cat harness, or have access to a 'cat-proof' garden or an outdoor cat enclosure or so called 'catio', this is of course a great added value.

WAITING LIST

If you are interested in a kitten from cattery Felis Limousi, you can find all the information you need to register below!

Registration:

! Please read our kitten policy in advance !

To register for a spot on the waiting list, you can contact us via the contact form on our website or send an email directly to catteryfelislimousi@gmail.comI appreciate it if you would include the following information in your email. Cause I would like to get to know future owners better to understand their wishes and expectations and to ensure our kittens will be placed in a loving and suitable home

  • Name, address, and optionally a phone number

  • Tell me a bit more about yourself, your family situation, home, and work:

    • Do you have kids?

    • Do you work from home?

    • Do you live in an apartment or a house?

    • Will the kitten have access to a secured, cat-proof garden?

  • Do you already have experience with cats and/or British Shorthairs?

  • Do you currently have other cats?

    • If yes, what are their ages?

    • If no, do you plan to adopt a second cat in the near future?

  • Do you have any other pets?

  • Please specify any preferences:

    • Preference for a male or female kitten?

    • Preference for a specific color? *

*Reminder: At our cattery, we do not breed classic colors but specialize in the golden and golden point color variations.

Points of attention:

  • Emails without a proper introduction that only ask about price or available kittens will not be answered.

  • There is no order of registration, because we are looking for the best match between a kitten and its future home. Homes where kittens can move in pairs or where another young cat is already present, have my preference.

  • Since there are always more requests than available kittens, a spot on the waiting list unfortunately does not guarantee that you can welcome a kitten from our cattery in the short term. Please note that waiting times can sometimes be long (varying from a few months to 2 years).

  • If you have already found a kitten elsewhere, please unsubscribe from the list.

What happens next after you have registered?

Expected litters and births are always announced on the website and Instagram page. If you are registered on the waiting list, it is helpful for me if you send another email as a reminder after the birth. This helps me keep track of who is still interested and actively looking for a kitten at that moment.

Once the kittens are 4 weeks old, I will contact the people on the waiting list. I do not immediately start looking for a suitable home after birth, as I want to give the kittens time to grow and develop properly during the first few weeks.

Under option:

From the age of 4 weeks, a kitten may be placed 'under option' until the kitten visit. This is mainly for future owners who have a specific preference for a certain color or gender or who have shown interest in a particular kitten.

Many future owners do not have a specific preference and would rather meet the kittens first to see which one they connect with, and that is perfectly fine too!

Reservation:

The first kitten visit is scheduled when the kittens are between 5 to 7 weeks old.

Before the visit, I will email the future kitten owners the health test results of the parents, the purchase contract, the guarantee certificate, and a self-written kitten guide. This guide is ideal reading material to help you prepare for your kitten’s arrival and contains useful information on topics such as housing, nutrition, and more.

Please take the time to review all the documents carefully so that any questions can be discussed during the kitten visit.

If there is a mutual connection, the kitten can be officially reserved during the visit. Once you have reserved a kitten, you can be sure that the kitten that stole your heart will soon become a part of your family!

If you need more time to decide, you have up to two days after the visit to make a final decision. If I do not receive confirmation within this period, I will continue searching for another suitable home.

For a final reservation, a deposit of €250 is required. A payment receipt will be provided, and this amount will later be deducted from the remaining purchase price.

Growing up until moving day:

Regular updates about the kittens are posted on Instagram, so future owners can follow their kitten’s growth and development.

If desired, an additional visit can be arranged when the kittens are around 10-12 weeks old.

Kittens can move to their new home around 16 weeks of age.

I remain available to answer any questions regarding nutrition, health, or general care. Updates and cute photos are always greatly appreciated! 💕

Kitten visit:

! IMPORTANT ! We strongly request that you do not visit shelters or other catteries on the same day that you visit our cattery! This is important to avoid the transmission of germs.

  • During your visit we will ask you to take off your shoes and disinfect your hands.

  • Kitten visits are reserved for future owners and their families. Please do not bring friends or other family members.

  • The degree of interaction possible with the kittens is determined by me at the time of the visit itself. Especially during the first 'maternity visit' it is possible that young children accidentally treat the still young, fragile kittens too roughly or it may be that the mother cat does not like it when her kittens are touched or picked up by strangers.

  • If possible, bring a blanket that can stay in the cattery until your kitten moves. That way, the kitten has something that carries the scent of 'home' when it moves to its new home.
